The 2014 exhibition will
coincide with the 140th anniversary of the founding of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club in
1874 and will also be 130 years since James McNeill Whistler exhibited 26
paintings with the Club in 1884. Amongst the 26 paintings was ‘Arrangement
in grey and black, no 1’, better known as the now famous ‘Whistler’s
mother’.
This year we are planning to celebrate
both these events at the 2014 exhibition, which will take place in Dun Laoghaire, in the Concourse (County Hall).
We are asking our members to submit
paintings ‘in the style of’ or ‘inspired by’ or as ‘homage to’ the work of early members of the Club. (These include: John Butler Yeats, Alexander Williams,
Walter Osborne, Earnest Hayes, Nathanial Hone, Sarah Purser, Richard Moynan,
Flora Mitchell, Percy French, and John Singer Sargent amongst others. More details on the history of the Club can be found at Club History
Please follow the links (highlighted names) to learn more about the history of each artist.
Some of our members have already started research on the theme and these will be shared on the blog shortly. It will be interesting to see the different processes that each artist uses to create their own independent versions and interpretations of the 'old masters'.
