140th Anniversary Exhibition

140th Anniversary Exhibition

The Concourse, County Hall, Dun Laoghaire

31st March to 13th April
Open 10am to 5pm daily
(Closing 4pm 13th April)

Expectations by Ursula Klinger

The 2014 exhibition will celebrate the 140th anniversary of the Club's  founding   and will mark the 130th anniversary of the Club's 1884 exhibition, in which James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent, were guest exhibitors.

In this exhibition, Whistler exhibited 25 paintings  including his most famous painting 'Arrangement in Grey and Black no 1' or 'Whistler's Mother'. The exhibition  proved  controversial, with a very critical review of Whistler's work, in the Irish Times but  a positive review in the Dublin Daily Express.

In the 2014 exhibition, in celebration of the Club's long history, a number of paintings exhibited will be 'reflective of or in homage to the early illustrious members of the Club'.  Among these members were  John Butler Yeats, Walter Osborne, Nathaniel Hone, and Sarah Purser and, additionally,  later members such as Flora Mitchell and Percy French.  To mark the 'famous' 1884 exhibition paintings, 'reflecting the work' of Whistler and Sargent will also be shown.

The Exhibition is sponsored by Whyte's and supported by an Arts Grant from Dun Laoghaire/ Rathdown Co Council Arts Office.
