A View of Venice by Deirdre O'Ciosoig - Inspired by Sargent

Ponte San Giuseppe di Castello, Venice, by John Singer Sargent

Sargent visited Venice many times in his later years, when he got tired of painting portraits. Over ten years he painted hundreds of watercolour and oil scenes in Venice, among other favourite places. His paintings show different aspects of Venice, from light filled scenes on the canals, to back streets and interiors with women in sombre clothes. His loose style of painting, which he learned while studying with Carolus Duran in Paris, reflects the watery scenes and the ambience of Venice so well.

My painting of the Grand Canal shows the wonderful Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the colourful palaces lining the waterway. My colour palette echoes that of Sargent's painting appended, entitled Ponte San Giuseppe di Castello (1910). The warm terracotta and cerulean blue are light-filled and fresh in both pictures. Looking at Sargent's mastery of watercolour, I am resolved to try the medium again.

Many of her paintings feature figures, as she loves to observe

children and adults enjoying life. She paints in a semi-impressionist style,
and aims to keep her brushstrokes loose, with an overall harmony of colour.

She has exhibited in group exbibitions in Dublin and Achill, and has shown

in galleries in Dublin and Westport.
