The Dublin Painting and Sketching Club held a small formal gathering of friends and members at the United Arts Club in Dublin last month for the conferring of Life Membership to the Club on Dr. Thomas Ryan PPRHA. The Club wanted to recognize his achievements as an artist and thank him for his valued support of the Club over the years.
In his acceptance speech, Tom expressed his gratitude for
the honour being bestowed on him, and his strongly held belief that
the tradition of the Club was very
worthwhile. He praised the members of the Club for continuing this tradition, which had its birth in the late 19th century. Through the members' commitment and enthusiasim, this same tradition has the capacity to sustain the craft of painting and also
encourage fellow artists. The
activity of the dedicated amateur, he professed, is unsullied by
the normal commercial and professional pressures, and carries
forth the proper spirit of his or her pursuit.
