Painting Gandon refers to Europe’s distant past and to 20th century Surrealism.
The Customs House is Ireland’s finest example of classical architecture. Gandon trained in the Palladian style, which links his work with the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome.
The painting’s central device - a canvas-and-easel that at once conceals and reveals the background – was frequently used by Rene Magritte in the 1930s.

Ulysses and the Sirens, by Aidan Hickey

The story of Ulysses and the Sirens has been depicted in every medium, from Roman mosaic to Technicolour film...It was the basis for the Ormond Bar episode of James Joyce’s novel, Ulysses.
This painting takes the liberty of casting Joyce as the protagonist. He and his distinguished crew, dedicated to their creative vocations, ignore all temptation and distraction.
